Abstract The study provides an assessment and comparative spatial and temporal analysis of the dynamics of four indicators of innovative sources of economic growth in 76 regions of Russia in 2005–2024: research and development expenditures, the use of advanced production technologies, the expenditures on technological innovation and the release of innovative goods. The indicators are normalized for the number of researchers, employment, and the number of industrial enterprises; the cost indicators are recalculated to constant prices in 2005. It was established that the first sanctions shock was the most important external shock in terms of its impact on the long- term dynamics of innovation indicators in the country’s regions. It interrupted the positive dynamics of the cost indicators of innovation, typical for 2005–2014 in most regions, transferring the long-term dynamics to stagnation or even decline. Comparative analysis of the development of regions with a similar development trajectory in 2005–2024 showed that by the end of the observation period, the regions that did not experience the structural shift associated with the first sanctions shock of 2014–2015 were able to achieve the highest results.
