| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of sanctions on Russia’s trade in industrial and commodity goods with Asia-Pacific and non-Asia-Pacific countries. It is shown that over the past three decades, the share of Asia-Pacific countries in Russia’s foreign trade turnover has increased significantly. By 2024, Asia-Pacific countries accounted for 52,2% of Russia’s commodity exports and 66,3% of its industrial imports. A greater deterrent effect of sanctions on Russia’s trade with non-Asia-Pacific countries compared to Asia-Pacific countries was found. It was determined that, on average, the tariff equivalent of «local» sanctions (2014–2021) was relatively small, amounting to 12 p. p. for Russia’s industrial trade with Asia-Pacific countries, less than zero for commodity trade, and 14 and 7 p. p. for Russia’s trade with non-Asia-Pacific countries, respectively. It was found that the tariff equivalent of large-scale sanctions (2022–2024) was significant for Russia’s industrial trade with sanctioning Asia-Pacific countries, amounting to 80 p. p., while for commodity trade it was 31 p. p. The corresponding figures for trade with non-Asia-Pacific countries were 100 and 82 p. p., respectively. It was shown that the less severe large-scale sanctions imposed by East Asian countries on the Russian economy contributed to maintaining Russia’s commodity exports to sanctioning Asia-Pacific countries. |
