Abstract This paper assesses the closeness of interregional economic integration in the Russian Federation for the period of 2006–2021. To obtain estimates, regional integration indices were calculated for each pair of 80 subjects of the federation under consideration for each year of the studied time interval. The indices are based on the relative growth rates of prices for individual commodity groups for a given pair of regions. Binary matrices are constructed on the basis of regional integration indices. It is shown that during the considered period there was an increase in interregional economic integration in Russia. Comparison of the matrices of interregional interactions for 2006–2013 and 2014–2021 showed a significant increase in the closeness of interregional ties. It is revealed that the regions of the North Caucasian and Far Eastern Federal Districts are most poorly integrated both within the corresponding districts and with the rest of the Russian regions. For the Central, Southern, Volga and Siberian federal districts, interregional integration ties within the districts themselves are closer than ties with the rest of the districts. It has been determined that the closeness of ties between federal districts weakens as the geographical distances between them increase. Thus, geographically contiguous federal districts tend to interact more closely than geographically distant districts.
