Abstract The modern stage of business development in the Republic of Kazakhstan is characterized by instability and insufficiently high business competitiveness. This study identifies the main trends and difficulties in the development of modern small and medium-sized businesses in the Kostanay region of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 2005 to 2017. The conclusion is made about the possibilities of solving the identified problems while providing timely state aid and support.
