Abstract It is quite difficult to identify the negative impact of alternative electricity on the environment through traditional approaches. Thus, the assessment of negative anthropogenic impact can be carried out only through the identification of resource intensity. To achieve this goal, the study used the criterion MI (Material Input)-numbers, which allows to identify the total amount of biospheric substance transported in the process of economic activity. The data of the total resource intensity for the traditional and alternative electricity of all regions of Russia, as well as individual federal districts, was calculated.
