Abstract The regional concept which originated in geography in the first half of the XIX century and, over time, acquired an interdisciplinary character ensures the effectiveness of the search for unity in the variety of forms of organization of economic activity. And if we accept that an economic region is distinguished by its integrity, both economically and territorially, this means that zoning should be a necessary element of strategic analysis. Moreover, it should be recognized that in the Russian Federation, whose economic space is characterized by a high level of heterogeneity, the state economic policy is doomed to be regional.
