Abstract The article analyzes the transformation of Russia’s trade relations with the countries of North-East Asia (NEA) – China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Mongolia – under the influence of exogenous shocks from 2014 to 2024. It shows that while positive export and import dynamics and the commodity structure of Russia’s foreign trade with the subregion maintained, the geographic structure underwent a transformation. The increase in the share of NEA countries in Russia’s foreign trade turnover was largely due to intensified relations with China. Conversely, a shrinking niche for Russian goods in the markets of Japan and the Republic of Korea was observed. Moreover, from 2022 to 2024, a significant increase in the level of trade and economic ties between Russia and China was observed, while, conversely, a sharp decline was observed in relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea and Russia and Japan. Russia’s trade with Mongolia was insignificant during the period under review, but a slightly positive trend emerged in mutual trade (primarily in exports) and trade and economic connectivity increased. It was determined that the change in the geographic structure of trade with the subregion is largely due to the accession of Japan and the Republic of Korea to sanctions against Russia in 2022, as well as the implementation of the «green» agenda in the countries’ energy strategies.
