Abstract This paper examines the long-term development of the Far East region in the new socioeconomic conditions of the late 1990s, as presented in the article «The Economy of the Soviet Far East: A Challenge to the Crisis» by Pavel Aleksandrovich Minakir (1947–2023), a distinguished scholar of international renown, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Economics, and Professor. First published 35 years ago, the article provides a detailed assessment of the structural crisis of the Far East economy in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during the transition to a market economy. It examines the causes of the failures of the planned system and regional disparities, and proposes adaptation mechanisms, including the development of foreign economic ties, as a response to geoeconomic shocks. The conceptual content of this article has become a catalyst for further large-scale research into complex regional systems, including the Russian Far East.
