Abstract This paper presents the prospects and potential impacts of developing a border crossing point system as an element of the Far Eastern Federal District’s cross-border transport infrastructure for Russia’s foreign trade relations. The development of transport and logistics infrastructure is one of the vectors of the state’s spatial policy in the Russian Far East. Reliable and efficient international transport links with Asian countries (primarily China, Russia’s main trading partner at the present stage) reduce costs and intensify trade, enabling the development of alternative routes to Europe with third countries. It is shown that the implementation of initiatives planned within the framework of the federal project «Development of Checkpoints Across the State Border of the Russian Federation» of the national project «Efficient Transport System» and regional initiatives will lead to an increase in border permeability of the Russian-Chinese border to the level of «moderate permeability» with an increase in the number of checkpoints to 29. While technological modernization and the introduction of intelligent checkpoint elements will allow the capacity of cross-border infrastructure to be increased more than threefold while reducing inspection times.
