Abstract The article presents a review of foreign economic theories that study the phenomenon of internal or interregional migration. The main attention is paid to the systematization of theories that explain the dependence of internal migration on the socio-economic differentiation of regions, as well as the impact of internal migration on the economy of the regions of origin and destination. The theories are heterogeneous in their genesis: some of them were specifically developed to analyze internal migration, others initially arose to explain other economic phenomena and aspects of human behavior and were then adapted to explain migration. The classic works of E. Ravenstein and E. Lee, neoclassical theories of the micro- and macrolevel, modern interpretations of neoclassical theory (theory of option value of waiting, theory of compensating differentials), theory of migration networks and new economic geography are considered.
