Abstract The study discusses the analytical value of the cost-of-living index as a measure of the relative price level in the Russian economic space. It is established that the estimates of the cost-of-living index obtained by Rosstat are heterogeneous across the country in terms of territorial coverage and representativeness of data by region. The worst representation of the indicator is typical for the most backward regions of late development and the most developed regions with an evenly distributed urban population. The thesis about the exclusivity of the cost-of-living index as a measure of the relative price level in comparison with other spatial indices is disputed.
