Abstract The article raises a number of scientific and practical problems, actualized by the widespread use of the «agglomeration» category in the text of «Spatial development strategy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025». The author presents his views on the place of agglomerations in the spatial structure of society, the difficulties of their interdisciplinary study, the methods for identifying agglomerations and describing their structure, the approaches to regulating agglomeration processes in Russia and its Far Eastern region. Attention is drawn to the risks associated with the high uncertainty of the consequences of strategic transformations of the Russian space.
