Abstract The migration processes in the regions of the Volga Federal District during the post-Soviet period are considered in the article. Subjects of the Russian Federation that have acted as migration donors and recipients are determined. The migration ties of the Kirov region are considered in detail. The region during 1992–2017 was the largest migration donor in the Volga Federal District. The coefficients of the effectiveness of migration exchange and the intensity of migration ties of the Kirov region with each region of the Volga Federal District are calculated.
