Abstract The article describes the two main groups of methods that are used in assessing the competitiveness of tourist destinations by foreign researchers. The analysis made allows making the following conclusion: a truly comprehensive assessment of the competitiveness of spatial systems (including tourist destinations) should be based on a system of marketing research, only if necessary supplemented by an analysis of indices.
